Lex Wunderink, psychiatrist
(1954) is head of the
Department of Education and Research
and director of psychiatric residency
training at Friesland Mental Health
Services, Leeuwarden, and working at the
Rob Giel Research Center, Groningen
University Medical Center, The
Netherlands. He recently conducted the
Medication Strategies in First Onset
Schizophrenia (MESIFOS) trial comparing
outcomes of targeted and maintenance
treatment strategy in remitted first episode
psychosis. He was trained as a psychiatrist
at Rotterdam University Hospital (1982). In
the early nineties he initiated one of the first
assertive community treatment services for
severely mentally ill people in the
Netherlands, inspired by the Madison
model. He was director of psychiatric
residency training at the Dordrecht Mental
Health Services until he moved to
Groningen University in 2001.
He is currently involved in research into the
risk factors of ultra high risk youth and first
episode patients and the implementation
of a youth at risk program. He is also
engaged in research on the effectiveness
of care for SMI patients, and carrying out
a trial comparing ACT vs ACT plus
evidence based interventions.
