Jeffrey A. Lieberman
Jeffrey A. Lieberman, MD currently is the Lawrence E. Kolb Chairman of Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Director of the New York State Psychiatric Institute, and Psychiatrist-In-Chief at New York Presbyterian Hospital. He holds The Lieber Chair and Directs The Lieber Center for Schizophrenia Research and Treatment in the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Lieberman received his medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC in 1975.
Following his postgraduate training in psychiatry at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center of New York Medical College, he was on the faculties of Albert Einstein College and Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and later served as Director of Research at the Hillside Hospital of Long Island Jewish Medical Center prior to moving to the University of North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel Hill, where he was Vice Chairman for Research and Scientific Affairs in the Department of Psychiatry and Director of the Mental Health and Neuroscience Center.
Dr. Lieberman’s research focuses on the neurobiology, pharmacology, and treatment of schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders. In this context his work has advanced the understanding of the natural history and phenomenology of schizophrenia, its pathophysiological basis, and the mechanism of action and clinical effectiveness of antipsychotic drugs. In terms of the latter, he currently serves as the Director and Principal Investigator of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Clinical Antipsychotic Trials of Intervention Effectiveness Research Program (CATIE). His research has been supported by grants from NIMH, the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD), and The Stanley Foundation. He is a member of The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI), the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine, and is Director of the NIMH Silvio O. Conte Center for the Neuroscience of Mental Disorders.
His work has been reported in more than 400 articles in the scientific literature and he has edited or co-edited eight books, including: the textbook “Psychiatry” currently in preparation for its 3rd edition, “Comprehensive Care of Schizophrenia: A Textbook of Treatment” currently in preparation for its 2nd edition, “Psychiatric Drugs,” and “Ethical Issues in Psychiatric Research: A Resource Manual on Human Subjects Protection.” He also serves on the Editorial Boards of: the Americal Journal of Psychiatry, Biological Psychiatry, Neuropsychopharmacology, Schizophrenia Bulletin, Current Psychiatric Reviews, the Journal of Psychiatric Research, Psychiatry-Experimental Neurology, Psychopharmacology Bulletin, and Psychiatry Research.
Dr. Lieberman is or has been a member of the Advisory Committee for Neuropharmacologic and Psychopharmacologic Drugs of the Food and Drug Administration, the Planning Board for the Surgeon General’s Report on Mental Health, the Committee on Research on Psychiatric Treatments of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), the APA Work Group for the Development of Schizophrenia Treatment Guidelines, the Brain Disorders and Clinical Neuroscience Review Committee, and the National Advisory Mental Health Council of the National Institute of Mental Health.
He is a recipient of numerous honors, including: the Adolph Meyer American Psychiatric Association Award, the Eugene A. Hargrove Mental Health Research Award, the NARSAD Lieber Prize for Schizophrenia Research, the National Advisory Mental Health Council (NIMH) Award, the 2003 and 2004 Best Doctors in America Award ®, the Stanley R. Dean Award for Schizophrenia Research from the American College of Psychiatry, the APA Research Award, the APA Kempf Award for Research in Psycobiology, the APA Gralnick Award for Schizophrenia Research, the Zisking-Somerfeld Award of the Sociaty of Biological Psychiatry, the Ernest Strecker Award of the University of Pennsylvania, the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, and the Lilly Neuroscience Award from the Collegium Internationale Neuro-Psychopharmacologicum for Clinical Research. Dr. Lieberman currently serves as Chair of the American Psychiatric Association Task Force on Ethics in Psychiatric Research and is a member of the World Psychiatric Association Editorial Committee for Position Paper on Atypical Antipsychotic Drugs.
