Professor Jan Scott is Professor of Psychological Medicine at the University of Newcastle, UK, and a Distinguished Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy.
Professor Scott trained in psychiatry in Newcastle upon Tyne and was then a professor in Glasgow and the Institute of Psychiatry in London, before returning to Newcastle. Professor Scott also held visiting academic posts with Aaron Beck at the University of Penn in Philadelphia, Eugene Paykel at Cambridge University, and Eduard Vieta in Barcelona and was also awarded the RCPsych travelling scholarship to Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore.
Her research focuses on combined pharmacological and psychological treatment strategies for individuals with complex mood disorders, and treatment-refractory schizophrenia, and the investigation of psychosocial factors in the onset and prognosis of severe mental disorders. She has a particular interest in the influence of health beliefs on medication adherence, and problems of engaging young adults at risk of recurrent mood disorders with appropriate mental health services.
Professor Scott has over 250 publications on these topics, and her grant income exceeds £5 million. She also plays an active role in training mental health professionals in psychological therapies, is a member of a number of national and international committees and psychiatric journal editorial boards, and was a Vice-Chair of the MRC Mental Health and Neurosciences Board, and is an advisor to the Manic Depression Fellowship.
